Intentional Decision Making
Our days are built on constant decision making. Cereal or eggs? This shirt or that one? Skip a workout or go to the gym? Finish this project or start the next? Everyday there is a new flood of things to decide.
Many out of reflex, make decisions without thinking on autopilot. And many others, feel paralyzed with making any decisions and just freeze up or go with the default. It’s an unfortunate situation as every little decision today builds our future.
By being mindful in each moment, you get to really take an active role in decision making in your life.
The breakfast you choose is the one best for that day, do you have time for a whole plate or do you need one for timely convenience? You consider if your muscles recovered from the previous work out or not, or if you’ve realize it’s been quite a while since you went to the gym and it’s time to go.
As for setting intention while mindfully deciding the course of your presence, that is quite simple.
You set an intention for your greater good. You dream to go to the gym everyday. So you decide to go to the gym with that intention in mind. You dream to save up and travel abroad so you skip the unnecessary purchase and study your language of choice because you are making your decisions based around that intention.
The key to this is forming the habit of reminding yourself of your intention as often as possible. It is your mantra, your anchoring thought, your drive. Every moment you come back to awareness from autopilot or distractions, you remind yourself of your goal and actively decide around it.
If you are struggling to discipline yourself with your decision making, start slowly. Choose one thing that is incredibly important for your journey and set a time to do it. Build from there with habit stacking.
Be kind with yourself, though the principles of Realistic Intentionality are simple, life is complex and the human mind is intricate. Some days it will feel like walking through mud just trying to accomplish a single thing. Have grace, it’s about progress not perfection.
