How to have Intentional Rest

When learning of all this, it can seem like a lot of exhausting work. Though the reality of it is the opposite since a major component is prioritizing joy and pleasure - being mindful can be tiring after years of disassociation.

Realistic Intentionality is about implementing realistic intentions in everything you do. Including the down time, sickness, times of injury, and at the end of a long day.

In fact, placing intention in rest will help your body recover more efficiently as you are less likely to push your limits. By honoring your rest, you truly take it in mindfully which allows the body to send the proper signals within its systems.

How do you have intentional rest?

On an average day you could make it a conscious point to:

  • get a good night’s sleep
  • only do physical exertion/exercise within your means
  • only take on mental loads within your means
  • make sure your schedule includes down time and listen to your body when you need it
  • avoid stimulating and caffeinated foods, drinks, substances and supplements towards the second half of the day
  • do an enjoyable and relaxing activity
  • create and accomplish a nightly routine that winds you down (such as a bath, a relaxing tea, limited screen time, etc.)
  • go to bed at a suitable time

You certainly don’t HAVE to do any of that. Some people like to ramp up and exert their extra energy before bed. And some people find they feel better when they pack their days with draining activities so they can simply knock out. All are valid! It’s all about figuring out what works for YOU and doing it consciously.

When you have an injury or sickness you can really be intentional with healing. You can make sure you truly understand the limits of your circumstance and not push yourself. You can take medicines and supplements that aide in recovery. You can eat soup and watch The Price is Right. The main thing is to not disregard illness or injury. Acknowledge it and accommodate it. Pushing yourself during these times may seem worth it, but your body will pay the price through excessive stress hormones and weakened immunity.

Life is a marathon, not a sprint. You need to pace yourself and know when you slow down and breathe. Burn out is a real condition that will knock you on your ass and make you feel like you’ve lost your mind.  Living intentionally includes rest and leisure. A well rounded life allows for time to relax.

Grant yourself that time and grace. And remind yourself you are doing great and everything is right on time. There is no rush.
